Just wondering if anyone's puffer tries to commit suicide while they're doing water changes?


My Fahaka always plunges himself so deep in the sand that only a small amount of his tail is visible :S

Fahaka's bury naturally as a form of camouflage so he may just be freaking out a little and trying to hide.

Although animals frequently misunderstand human technology and routinely die from it (squirrels and cars; birds and plate glass windows, for example,) I seriously doubt any animal would willfully take its own life.

+1 to El Scorpio's comments - they are more likely trying to escape what they see as a threatening situation.

i beg to differ. i swear birds get a thrill out of seeing how close they can come to a car though lol. too many times you see birds dive bomb and swoop in passing in front of your car as you drive 45 mph. i also like last week or so me and my co worker were coming back from lunch, walking up the parking lot steps i saw a fly sitting on the cement, my friend went to step up and the fly went away so he didnt get hurt. well he only circled around and landed under my foot as i was 3/4 done my step, yes he committed suicide lol

of course im joking, though it does seem coincidental lol

Robins are notorious for this in my area (probably everywhere in the world they do the same), but I do agree with what El Scorpio is saying... Trying to escape a threatening situation or object.

I guess in my case I'm lucky I don't have a puffer that tries to eat me while I'm cleaning.

Birds will attack shiny objects, especially if they see their own reflection. Ever see a cardinal fight its own reflection in a window? I pick up at least two dead cardinals a year out of my yard because they keep beating themselves to death on my basement windows trying to fight the bird on the other side. Suicide? No. Territorial dispute with what they perceive to be a rival male during mating season? Yep. Always bet on plate glass window in Plate Glass vs Bird? Yep.

i have never see a cardinal do that i dont really see how they would see their reflection in a car thats moving 30 mph and they are coming from by the trees above. i think its more thrill for them with the moving cars, dive bombing into windows is another story. at my work we have birds that fly into second story windows, could also be trying to fly at the other "attacking" bird. i was definitely joking about the suicidal birds and the fly. its just amusing to think about a suicidal animal

I hope that you understand fish better than you do birds....

i hope you understand that mainly they are just assumptions or wishful thinking, more so being for my amusement. do i legitimately believe that birds have an understanding of a "thrill" the same as we do? of course not, that would give them the thought process that humans have

What about Crows/Ravens, I've seen some do some crazy things around town that makes me wonder if they're getting a thought process like we have or they're evolving/learning from us.

Back on topic, what about carpet divers? There was someone on BCA who had a silver Arrowana that dove up and out then down (I believe) two flight of stairs. Anyone think they do it for the thrill / think they see something or have something planned out / fluke of time / or just escape artist?
