Weird mold-like substance

When I went to feed my shrimp tank tonight, something looked really weird, so I turned the lights on and checked it out... There was a nasty white film on the surface of the substrate towards the center of the tank, like mold or something. Some of it had crept up on the edge of the driftwood, too. I immediately siphoned it away, but the stuff on the driftwood stuck. There was a strong whiff of sulfur when I started vacuuming, but it went away quickly. All the inhabitants - shrimp, snails, oto cats - are acting totally normal. The only recent changes are selling off most of the shrimp and removing several plants for sale... Oh, and I cut back my fertilizer doses in the past few weeks. WTF is this?

Could it be lack of water circulation?

I've had it at this level for a long time without this happening.

any chance of a pic / microscope shot?
There was that one case where I had that FW slime mold, an interesting FW amoeba.
I don't know if it can be ID'd without a microscope though.

I vacuumed it and didn't get a picture - I was afraid it would be toxic or something.
Microscope shot? Uh... no.

awwww they are cheap off ebay. Mine was only $40
Anyway to the naked eye it looks like a fungus. The main difference is that it moves and grows.
I had it in my rocks and it looked like a living moving white hairnet. parts also got on the glass which was where I was able to get the photo from.

Ew! No, this is pretty static. A little grew back last night, but it's not moving around. It's a very thin layer, and when I touched the stuff on the driftwood, I couldn't feel anything.

you won't ...
When mine moved it was about 1" per day. It expanded, of course, and relocated. It moves very slowly.
BUT that is just some info on what I had... this may or may not be what you have.
Ohhh a cheap trick to micro pics.... get a child's microscope and tape a cheap digi cam to the eye piece

I think your media filter is full, ready to get clean (circulation goes slow with full media).
if it not moves it could be also organic matter in decomposition by fungi.
Hey jean did that alien really lived in your tank? what did you do with it? looks cool.
