I need an urgent reply so I know if my juvenile s and s puffer will last the night, I was hand feeding him when he bit my hand and I automaticaly pulled my hand back. he landed on the carpet and puffed a little bit, he was out of the water for about 45 seconds before I could manage to scoop the poor thing up and release it in the water. are there any tips that will improve the chances of my puffer survivng i.e ways of decreasing stress

Well... that one is for the pros but you shouldn't be hand feeding...

he seems to be a lighter colour, from no on use plastic tongs to feed, I also switched off all lights to help him to calm down.

what you want to be worried about in this situation is him ingesting air as that can be deadly for puffers. has he been swimming at all since this happened? if so does he swim normally or favoring a side at all?

yh. I was worried about that. although when he was out of water he puffed up a bit and then puffed out again, he turned a severe black oily colour when I returned him to the tank but is now back to he usual colour, he was also breathing heavily when i returned him. I think he will be fine, but not too sure.
My other problem was I saw my maroon clownfish (which is very friendly and gets on absolutely fine with the puffer) but I noticed his anal fin had a very large bite taken out of it (about half of it gone) he is only a juvenile but does not seem to be acting any different, I also assume that it was my puffer who bit him when he was under lots of stress. are there any tips to help this my puffer and clown usualy brush past eachother they even both sleep next to eachother. I have added 3 teaspoons of melafix

I have recently bought a juvenile stars and stripes puffer which is about the length of my index finger. It is currently living in a 180l tank with a small maroon clownfish. However on the fifth night (I have only had him for six days) I fear that he may have been bitten by the clown as I noticed that when he fannes out his tail there is small piece missing and a small tear in it, I am not sure whether the clown did this or not since they have been living together peacefully all day.

I told you from your very 1st post, these fish should be separated!

unless they fight at night, they sleep in the same area, share food and get along fine

as pp said mate, clowns are a pain get it gone !!!

Most destruction by fish is done in the dark of night. Who else do you think is doing the biting, a burglar?

nugget is fine and I now always use tongs when feeding, my tank quality has improved since I added 7kg of curedlive rock to start with and I am aiming to get more if I save my pocket money. my clownfish anal fin was infected but with melafix treatment it has almost fully grown back. my puffers tail is now fine and the ammonia is 0 and nitrite ranges from 0.25 down to zero after every water change. had a bit of an algae frenzy after adding live rock but i scraped ornaments and inside of tank, would one of those min algea eating crab help to clear my live rock of algae? or will it get eaten? my live rock has lots of little holes for it to live in, I just don't want my little anemoes that started to grow to be choked by algae...
