Ever see a mislabeled puffer?

Twice I've been to places that have had puffers of different species with ones that were listed as gsp's or F8's. Wondering if anyone else has seen this? The misplaced 2 i saw I believed to be a SAP & Ceylon....

I wish the corperate's knew how serious people take their fish. They wouldn't get away with it if we were talking dogs...

I see mix breeds names made up all the time, to sell it faster. Especially larger breeds which are labled as small ones, to get them out.

I think the Lfs I mentioned earlier makes them up. They sell ceylons as spotted puffers

Mmhm, constantly. I think the most common mix-up is GSP's and Figure 8's.

What also is seen a lot is GSPs labelled as "Spotted Congos" aka Tetraodon schoutedeni... obviously to sell them as freshwater... There have been no T. schoutedeni in trade for >20 years...

And the situation Corvus mentions is truly sad. Those would otherwise likely be popular fish.
I do not go into the chains often, but even my LFS gets in and offers for sale mislabeled "FW" puffers fairly regularly. But it happens also to other families of fish. It is certainly not limited to puffers.

Yes, I have. I mentioned it to the store manager as well but the name was never changed. Given the store that didn't surprise me much.

I think it is a trickle down mistake.
You place your order based on a scientific name. They translate that to the local language and some bloke gets your fish who may in fact know neither. Or they get a fish in and don't really know what it is and just place it in the container with he wrong label.
Then distribution gets it and if it is clearly wrong and unknown to them, sometimes they just make up a name. Trust me, this happens more often than you think.
Then that species gets shipped to the LFS under false pretenses and they are no pros either. Usually the LFS will take the word of the distributor because they are in the business.

Ceylon labeled as mbu but my local maiden head is actually quite good
