The Puffer Forum

Hello, folks. Been keepin' fish for 29 years. I'm mainly into cichlids, especially those from the Rift Valley, but always have a few tanks with a selection of other fish about as well. I always seem to have a green spotted puffer or two in a brackish tank. Over the past year I've acquired a coupla other puffer species. Currently I have one Auriglobus modestus, one green spotted, and three figure eights.

Tried my hand with pea puffers a while back, but could not keep 'em fed. Tried every trick I know, every type of live and frozen food I could get my hands on, and still watched 'em slowly waste away. One of the pickiest fish I've ever dealt with. Wanna try again, but not 'til I figure out why they wouldn't eat for me. Nothin' I've read 'bout 'em says they're any harder than other puffers to feed, and to be honest with ya, considering some of the species I've kept and had spawn over the years, I'm rather ashamed to admit I crashed and burned so miserably. But, it is what it is.

Welcome! Where abouts in Wyoming are ya from? I grew up in Green River and just recently (in the past few years) have moved up here to Idaho. There is lot of great information here, hope you can take advantage.

Hey, briguy44. I'm in Cheyenne. Lived in Laramie when I went to UW, been all over the state over the years, huntin' and fishin' and such. Been in Wyoming most my life, can't imagine livin' anywhere else.

Well, hello Pufferpunk. As for parasites, possible, but I'd be surprised. I treat for parasites during QT, a habit I got into with WC mbuna to help prevent bloat. Used a combo of mild dosages of Prazipro and metro. The only thing they'd eat and not spit out was live copepods; ignored small pond snails and ramshorns, small live worms of various types and anything frozen I tried. I couldn't keep a steady supply of the copepods without a culture, and got that established too late. Like I said, was at wits end, never dealt with such picky fish. Everything I've read said they should be eatin' at least some of the things I tried. Mayhap it was just the particular bunch of DPs I acquired mine from, but I plan on bein' a bit more prepared next time around.

All mine will eat is live blackworms. Picky lil devil!
