Hey Guys

I just got some live rock delivered to me today and have relised I don't have a heater at my house as I've just moved and left the heater at my parents.

Will the LR be ok in cold water for the night? The LR is already cold from being transported here over night.

Will it be ok?

mate LR comes into the country wrapped in newspaper, bung it in some salty, get water movement, skimmer on and expect some stink. your house is warmish i am guessing?

be prepared for a cycle though, get some phosphate remover involved to sort out a future problem and try to scrape most of the dead bits off. what does the rock smell like and have you got some pics.

Treat it as uncured rock.

The LR smells of the sea, no horrible rotting smell at all. I bought the LR on Ebay, the guy has had it in his tank for years. There's alot of purple growth which is good.

Here's a pic (note theres some wet carboard in the bottom left of pic and bottom center) I'm making some warm SW at the moment, I'm gona leave my heating on overnight to so hopefully it'll be ok. I've found a pump theat I can put in with it to curculate the water.

Smells like the sea is good to me, test yer water tommorow for amm/nitrite/nitrate as you get a bit of due off. Whens it going into the tank?

OK I'l test the bucket water it's in tomorrow to see if there's any Amm etc. I'm hoping to get it in the tank tomorrow

Absolutely do not place in tank with live animals, until you have cured it for at least a week, showing 0 ammonia/nitrite!

Oh I see, not a new tank set up? Indeed then, never ever place uncured rock into a stocked tank.

Yes, fine to cure in a new tank with 0 inhabitants.

Yeah I have no animals yet, just cannot set the tank up right now as I'm unpacking etc hense the LR in a bucket.

Buckets fine, a friend of mine used to cure LR in a bath tub. He even had a light hooked up to promote macro growth.

I got some LR from a guy on Craigslist. He pulled it out of the tank and put it in a dry bucket outside for at least a day. It was about 45 below zero. I put it in a bucket for a week and had no increase of ammonia or nitrite so i then moved it to my tank. Everything has been fine since, lots of new growth of coraline alega and hitchhikers.

OK so I've just tested my water and it's reading:-

Am = 1.5ppm
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 10
Ph = 7.8

I'm going to put the LR in my empty tank tomorrow so that there's more water and it's more diluted.

To cure the rock do I just keep doing water changes every day untill the ammonia gets to 0?
