i bought a new fish tank a few days ago and it came with 3 large silver dollars and angel and this cichlid. the tank was in VERY bad shape. i tested the water in the tank and the nitrate levels were over 200! i found homes for the other fish but this cichlid looks pretty bad, no color, very inactive. hes in clean water now while i try to nurse him back to health. but im not sure what species he is. heres a pic.

It seems to be in it's hiding colors.

He'll be fine, now that he's in clean water. Probably a bit of shock to his system though.

what is an "x"? im assuming its going to be hard to identify him until his colors come back right?

Flowerhorn or a cross with another fish

"x" just means a cross of hybrid. Flower horns are themselves crosses, or some would say, mongrels.

noticed today his color is starting to come back. still a bit dark but some yellow starting to show on the lower half of his body. i try to get another pic up.

Could quite possibly be a yellow belly salvini I have two in my tank and almost look identical to that when blending into the darkness of the caves they have and new colour coming up on his body now??

Any updated pics with more natural coloring?

looks like a darker version of some sort of Parachromis ....maybe ??
