Thermometer Broke in Cray Tank

I came home today to find one dead Marmorkreb. Then I checked the other 3 and all were still alive. Water parameter all good. Then I looked at the thermometer. It was broken. How is that possible? All the black balls from the thermometer fell out, but everything else is in tact. Will the steel/metal balls harm the crays? I don't see any mercury leaks because the red line seems fine.

The cray that died is full grown, so it could also be due to old age and my thermometer could have been broken for a while now.

I would keep a very close eye, if no mercury leaked it may be coincidence that he passed

had this happen in a piranha tank once, you can use a large magnet to remove the metal beads. It is time comsuming but works rather well.

Opt for digital thermometers in future , you can get them for next to nothing on ebay .

I got paranoid last night and did a 80%pwc.

I'll try the magnet idea next time
