most of my readings have agreed that snails do not care whether they have substrate or not, and that having a bare tank bottom makes cleaning really easy for snail breeder tanks.

However, you don't have your bacteria bed with no substrate... But I'm not sure snails are too picky about all that either.

I used to have substrate in the snail tank. And I dreaded cleaning it. Absolutely hated it. I have always hated the look of bbtanks, so I wanted gravel. Finally got tired of it and took it out, it's been the best thing I have ever done for it because now, it's so much easier to maintain and keep clean. Snails are breeding more too. HTH
