that's pretty much personal prefrence, i turn mine on when i get up, and off when i go to bed. if you start to get algae problems you should reduce your light.

I turn my lights on when I get home from work at 5:30 and turn it off before going to bed at 10pm. Only plant in my tank is java moss. Just be sure to have enough light for the fish to know its day time and night time.

It's truly best for the fish to have the light on a timer for 6 - 8 hours. They will become accustomed to when the light will turn on and off, and that is less stressful than random.

one more +1
I got my lights on a timer, 2pm till 10pm. I dont have much direct sun light during the day, so eight hours is fine for me. I would also agree, if algae would show cut the light down.

8 hrs for me too (4:30P-12:30A). And I just use the cheap $5 timers from Home Depot. I also leave a 9w cfl lamp on in the room all the time so it doesn't go from light to total dark completely, or vise versa.
