I don't think 1 or 2 bbgs would be making the tank "overstocked"!

At one point I've had 2 F8 + 2 bbg in a 30 gal tank, I was happy with it

I have kept 1-3 BBG w/ one F-8 in 20-long tanks routinely w/o problems. For me personally, I never keep anything more than a singleton in a 15 without any tankmates. Such fish can generally see one or more conspecifics in adjacent tanks however. Believe it or not, that eyes-only exposure does increase activity levels.
