I have just bought a 2nd hand 5' 400 litre tank and am a very happy bunny. Could you suggest a Puffer for this tank? Is there a Puffer who could live with a large catfish or ropefish perhaps? Any suggestions for stocking this tank will be very much appreciated.

That's about 105 gallons. I was gonna say Fahaka, but they need 125 gallons. If you wanna go brackish and eventually to marine you could do 2 green spotted puffers. Three figure 8's could work, but they are brackish...they can have bumblebee goby tankmates. Unfortunately most puffers can not have tankmates. You could do 50 dwarf puffers! That would be fun!

400 liters is about 100 us gallons, there's not much in the way of larger puffers you could keep in there, but a group of smaller ones would be neat

I definitely would not recommend a large catfish in there, and I think a ropefish would either be picked on by puffers, or eat your puffers.

If you make it a species only tank you could put a few South American Puffers(like 6 or 7), or some irrubesco (5).

Or you could go low-end brackish, which would probably give you the coolest fish options (some f8's, dragon gobies, bumblebee gobies, and maybe some mollies would look awesome in there).

Or a exceptionally good single specemin tank for a mid sized fw puffer like a Congo?

I'm fairly new to fish keeping and think I need to stick to fresh water for the time being so unfortunately the gorgeous F8s and Gobys are out for now. A good plan for future populations though...

There really isn't much of a difference between Freshwater and low-end Brackish. If you like the fish I'd say go for it. Brackish tanks are so fun, the only difference is a little bit of salt.

(though I've always wanted to see an army of DPs in a big tank!)

South americans need regular dentistry. Not really a good beginner puffer in my opinion

IMO too big of a tank for just a Congo.

1st puff 5gal and additional puffs 3 gal each. You do the math.

why catfish or rope fish? Do you have these already?

have you considered going salt?
