Skimmer doubt...

Hello friends! good as was predicted, the salinity of the aquarium and is at 1,020.

Now I have got a question, I researched a bit but have not found final answers and come to ask you...
I know it may sound stupid, but i can't have a Sump (no space)... and i was wondering about the possibilities...

can i combine a skimmer with an external filter?
The idea would be to connect the external filter´s "IN" hose to the "IN" Skimmer, draining the aquarium water to the skimmer that will execute the process (theoretically normal) draining the water to the external filter and this one will send it back the the aquarium ...

Something like this:

More Q:
1.- will this work correctly?
2.- Do i really need a skimmer if the population is: 2 gap (in 40g temporally) and dense carpet of Caulepra prolifera?

I don't think that will work, maybe if they have same flow rate but doubtful. How about a backpack?

if shipping is a problem, get pictures from from different sides and build it. Acrylic is very easy to work with and it is all straight lines. Just boxes in boxes.
