My tank space is smaller than yours.. He's swimming in a 150g + a 60g heavily planted fuge. He sleeps abt half the time. The other half he will be scouting ard in the tank. Only occupant. I have seen him burrow only once in my older tank and I got a shock. I, imo think this species burrow as much.. Its those lurkers with the mouth pointing upward that do burrowing. Something should be scaring him. How long have U had him? does he get excited during feeding time?

He's near 9in now.

oh ya he rip's around for prawn as soon as i open the freezer our show him a prawn. ive had him since April . he has been ripping around the hole time till i got back from a 7 day vacation. i feed him like every three days . i told my friend to feed three times while i was gone. she did it three days in a row . came back did not eat for 15 days. he does have 15 head and tail light tetras in there since i got the mbu. i putt a tall 24 inch kind of sword plant in there two weeks before i went on vacation and it did not seem to matter. i got the plant out now just to see if he will improve . so . i have no light on during the morning and from 3 to 9 PM i have a T5 high out put 60w 10000k light for my 3 swords in my 180G and a few rock. i then took rock out the tank, quite a bit since ive been back. but not seem to matter . i have and old 30g light that i put on after 9pm its a dim light . so he ripps around but he knows ill feed him around then. like i feed every three days like 5 big prawn. but as treats i feed him like clam in shell our mussels. our clam meat our just crab meats . and lots of gardens snails he will never turn down garden our rams horns snails. i have had a fahaka for 6 years . and dragon puffers for years so i do know quite a bit with puffers. but as soon as something happens its like five billions questions i ask my self and any one could be right . heres i pic just before i left

So he was overfed? Are you saying he was more active before your vacation?

You said she fed him 3 days in a row & then he didn't eat for 2 weeks. Sounds overfed. If I eat too much, I don't move around a lot either.

I sorry.. when u say "ripps around" it meants he's excited rite? cos u added a but after that.. And I assume it total of 5 big prawns within 3 days. From the look of the tank, I think he should be bigger than 6-7in, especially when u say u had him since april. He should be bigger than that.. If he had been alright/not lazy b4 your holiday, then I am not too sure what happened, maybe as pp said, overfed.. (unless grossly overfed) but unlikely cos i feed mine everyday @ a small portion to get him a bit rounded. Well, for every fish keepers, there would be some habits or methods that each swears by..

This is what I do to mine..
I uses a normal CF light over my tank. ( I think yours is too glaring esp with the white sand. )
I had 3 neon tetra but I remove them. (I swear that these are affecting him, though not disturbing him in any way..)
I random my feeding time so he does not know when I will be feeding. So he does not lie there and be lazy waiting for his meals.
My tank lights are on from 2pm to 11pm. other than those timings, hes usually resting on the substrate or watching me..

Well these are my setups and routine, and works for me..

Or, he could be plain lazy..

so.. your daughter skates in the house?
