How necessary is an air bubbler in a planted aquarium?

Not necessary at all.

In fact, an airstone is not needed in any properly set tank. Current is needed, separate aeration is not.

I have a clam shell that opens and closes with an air bubbler, and on several occasions, I have walked in to our room and found Luau playing in the bubbles (these aren't air stone bubbles, these are bigger because they build up then once the clam shell opens, they are released) and chasing them. It's very entertaining =)

Hula loves air bubbles too. I have a bubble disc in my tank and he loves to "ride" the bubbles from the tank floor to the top, then repeat.

So as long as the surface is rippling, the aeration should be sufficient?
