Hello everyone, I have been on the search for a Red Eye Puffer for some time and today I found a FW Puffer that looks very similar to one. It was labeled as "Jet Black Boreno (not borneo) Puffer. I tried looking the puffer up but found no info on it. Maybe you all can help me identify? Much help appreciated and thanks!

Looks like a male Red Eyed Puffer, Carinotetraodon lorteti.

Thanks for the replies guys! He is about 1 1/2 inches. He's a little shy but he will adjust.

you have purchased him?? it doesnt look like any of the red eye puffers i have seen. they are all darker... maybe the ones i seen are something different. but tomorrow morning im walking into big als and demanding they give me this red eye puffer in their one tank. tail completely chewed off by cichlids and im sure it wouldnt be long before the jazz fins. i really hope they give him to me as a rescue. im buying a few other things so i figure they might do it. i feel so sorry for him.

That is a female lorteti. The males have a blue tail:

Sorry about the awful pic.

Not a C. lorteti. That's clearly a C. borneensis.
I'm not even sure PPs puffer is a C. lorteti. That picture is quite bad and C. borneensis has been sold as C. lorteti a lot in the past.

Very beautiful puffer :D.

I can apparently order them at the LFS. But they are quite expensive in comparison to the lortedi. It's listed here as a Red-Eyed Borneo Puffer.

Yeah, I'm really bad at this species, although I'm pretty positive about the blue tail of the lorteti. Corvus, do you think the OP has a M or F?

The tail of C. borneensis is pretty similar. We once had nice pictures (by Sean I think) of both male and female on this site (around 2006), but they apparently are gone. The M/F thing of this species is still to be discussed, most experts would say female. I think there are some open question on this very species.

Here are some links:

Especially the last one (and the first) shows it sometimes does not seem to be easy to determine sex only by coloration. The tail looks male, the body rather female. I'd prefer to use the keel/crest to identify males in addition to coloration just as with dwarf puffers.
