The Puffer Forum

Well.. where to begin? some of you my be familiar with my older post not getting a puffer. Well that may be changing. I might be getting some ramshorn snails in about Christmas. No puffer yet because the moron at the pet store told me nerite snails would breed easily. Spent 20 on snails to have them not breed. So no food source for the puffer yet. My aunt has so many ramshorns in her pond she doesn't know what to do. So bottom line I am going salt this Christmas and she is bringing me the snails so would a tobie eat the snails?

also would a tobie get along with a royal gramma?

Not only do nerites not breed in fw, but they are too hard for a puffer to eat safely. Sorry that dodo lied to you.
But ramshorns are a great choice. It's up to the personality of the puffer, but it's potential. Is this tank in question at least a 29?

I'd say that would be a minimum for a small toby, like what PP just got. I was pretty sure you said it was 29 before.

oh like a leopard toby? I had something like that in mind. What other tobies are there that could fit in my tank?

I guess any species not exceeding 4". Of course it's always nicer to provide them with more space over the minimum.

please give me some specific spesies. Oh yeah forgot to mention that i have never done a puffer before.

I'm not very familiar the canthigaster genus, but if you find one that is available for you to purchase, just make sure he/she is max 4".

the spotted sharpnose for example needs approx 25 gallons but only get about 4.5 inches. they are a puffer though so thats why theres a high suggestion for such a small fish, they are messy and put out a bioload larger than most fish. now if you wanted a royal gramma, i dont know how reliable the site was but i found a site that says 25-30 gallons. you would just have to accommodate for the other fish being in also.

the pedia has almost every known puffer. i didnt see PP's newest listed however. but do some browsing and you will find a bunch that are suitable for a smaller-ish aquariums if you wanted to stay around the 25-55 gallon mark. there are other options than tobies to be put in a smaller tank if you arent set on doing saltwater yet

You could see what your LFS has on it's order list for that genus, and then you could do research on them. Or, if you would be ordering online, you could check out the stock on places like Live Aquaria.
I had never even heard or seen the little paw printed toby PP just got before, it's so awesomely adorable!

All tobies are about the same size. I'd only keep one toby in a 29, they are REALLY messy eaters and create a lot of waste.

I wouldn't imagine there to be a problem. A purple firefish might be a better choice as they are less aggressive but similar looking to the royal gramma.

eh I don't like firefish very much. I have decided to get a leopard toby. I can't wait.
