Hi guys. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of snails I am breeding? I know that ramshorns & pond snails are ideal. I think they are pond snails? Theyre the free ones at Petsmart:





Also, I was wondering if there are any small singleton fish that won't eat the snails or snail eggs that I can get so my snail tank isn't so.. boring? It's a 6 gallon.

Those are pond snails
Since snails pooooooop so, I'd say no fish for a 6 gallon as you may find your water getting to smell of hot dogs in less than a week once your snails start reproducing.

I was thinking it may be too much poop, too. blah. I'll just decorate it really pretty & stick it in the display tank thread, haha.
i never noticed a smelly tank smelled like hot dogs.

5 gallons of water + bottom feeder tabs + caboodles of snails = oodles of doodles and hot dog aroma

i need to get some algae tabs, getting out to petsmart this weekend i think. i've just been giving them nori & the decor has a lot of algae on it.

ahh give her a break she could stick one guppy in there!!!

just put an fluval 405 canister filter on it and it should be fine.

(but seriously one little fish wouldnt hurt for a connection to the tank would it syn?)

Thanks DrK! I was thinking guppy, but i didn't know if I needed more than one, or if they'd eat the snails.
The tank is actually a nanocube, so the filter is whatever it is attached to.

eh i dunno I go back and forth whether or not I even want a guppy or something in there. Thats why i asked. @_@ haha.

I'm just saying, in a tank under 10 gallons, the snail population can explode, and the bioload can be extreme. I can't in good conscience suggest submitting a fish to those conditions, just to have a fish in there. It's a utility snail breeding tank and it's a low number of gallons. If you want a fish, then set up something over 10 gallons so the water quality can be upheld.

I have fish in my snail tank, I upgraded from 5 to 35 gallons. The tiny tank was just getting too gross too fast. The fish were not planned, but they needed to be moved from the dragon's lair, they are not bothering the snails thankfully

More room is always better and IME easier to maintain.

In smaller tanks, efficiency it a big deal. If you are trying to maintain a snail colony for feeding, set a tank to that. Breed and grow snails. Feed them, grow them, harvest them. That means no fish, period. Fish are not beneficial to breeding snails so they should not present in a minimum scale operation.

Is that clear enough?

If you want snails, do that.

If you want a fish, do that.

Separate tanks please!
