Weighing wood down????

I'm setting up a new tank for my DP's. I found a piece of wood that I like. I want to stand it on end and weight it down. I plan on screwing it down to a piece of slate. Is it safe to use stainless steel screws? What type of drill bit do I need to drill through the slate that hopefully won't crack it? Any other tips...thanks!

i would use a rubber band and a rock. Screws corrode

Even stainless? I hate the rock/rubberbsnd method. Especially for what I'm trying to accomplish.

I used my old scuba diving ankle weights, until it got waterlogged.

8lb test and heavy enough rock to hold it down.

I thought I could use stainless. I might just go with some tank sealant.

Well, the peas didn't get a new tank, Manson did. I'll be spending my Sunday off rotating fish all day.

Aquarium sealant is very short-lived in holding wood. It won't last much longer than a rubber band. As the surface of the wood softens it will pull free.

Aquarium sealant is great for glass, It is poor for wood, rock, plastic, etc.

Aquarium-safe epoxy putty is best for rock. But it in not very good for wood.

A long stainless steel screw will work, and it won't rust.

I second the SS screws, they will not harm your fish.

I am still a fan of the whole tying large rocks to fishing line and then tying it to the wood

ya all of these options work. what i do is just put it in a bucket of water until its waterlogged. usually takes a few days. than it will sink on its own. thats always worked for the wood ive found.
