Dwarf Puffers!

So heres the thing I am getting more experienced in my tank skills. I have gotten Sol's tank done and every thing is straightened out for the most part! :D Well anyways since with in the next few months I am moving him into a larger tank in my downstairs I guess what you would call...walk way....then I have to cycle the tank for like 3 weeks since it is 225gallons. I hope he will love that tank :D But anyways to the point!

I have Sol in a 40G and my Mother has become a recent kind of closet puffer fan1 :P she wants puffers I guess of her own...but yet I will of course care for them. So the 40G would be perfect for them correct? I am understanding from what I read its 1 DP per 5g of water? Also could I use the water from Sols old tank to put the DP's in since it is fully cycled?

Any other information I should know would be great! I have read up most of what I should be aware of! Hopefully I can find a few in AZ! :)

First off water does not contain any good bacteria what does contain bacteria which will help the cycle is a filter from a healthy tank, gravel, plants and decor. Now if you are just moving Sol out of the 40 gallon and plan to move the dwarfs into that tank within a day or two than that tank will already be cycled and ready for those puffers. As long as Sol is disease free your good to go with that 40g.

On another note it shouldn't take you 3 weeks to cycle a tank, I would be moving Sol out of the 40 gallon ASAP. Here are a few links for reading.

I'm assuming that the filter with the 40gallon will be staying on the 40 gallon because of course you will need a much larger filter on the 225. If you do plan on moving the current filter over go ahead and put a new filter on the 40 now so it can start collecting bacteria. You can also take some media from the current filter and seed the new filter of need be. I've had to seed to new filters with old media on several occasions. As long as you get the Dp's in the 40 quickly after Sol is moved you should be fine. Leave the substrate and some decorations behind as well, the more the better. Good luck and get Sol in that tank soon!

Well I had to put my buddys media in my filter because my water got all out of wack and now its back to near perfect! So I do have extra filter media inside the current filter I am using. So I would be taking some out and putting it in the 225gal tank to help start it. But I mean it is a 225 and wouldn't you think it would take longer than 10 days to get started?! lol but anyways thank you for the questions answered and the advice!

Not always. Depends how you are doing it. I'm lucky enough to have available tanks to pull stuff from to seed with. Also, if you just put the filter media in the tank without an ammonia source your beneficial bacteria will have nothing to feed on and die. Whenever I seed a tank fish are added immediately as an ammonia making source. If you don't have liquid test kits yet, get them...not dipsticks...they a worthless.

Yes I know I have to go get Bio-Spira from my LFS to start it. I am just waiting on the call to go pick up the tank. That is all. Yes I do have liquid test kits they are being shipped to me!
