Just curious as to what bad advice has been given, this could be useful to new fish/puffer keepers.



I was told today that all puffers are s/w by a certain lfs,,,,,, even though they sell f8's,gsp, and spotted puffers (they call ceylons that??????wtf) as f/w puffers. Some shops deserve to close imo.

Also after asking if they can order prime they told me aquasafe was better as it actually worked and prime was walrus!

The reputable LFS near me argued with me about toby puffers, he tried to "convince" me that tobies are file fish, and not puffers. I told him that there is a mimic file fish that looks like the saddled puffer, but they are in different families. Same order, but different families.

I find this particularly irritating because of how arrogant they are.
He also tried to sell me a bag of live sand, I shook my head and said I'm not buying that walrus, and then he admitted that it would just create an ammonia spike. So he tried to still me surlaW thinking I wouldn't know better.

I don't go there anymore. There are more reasons too.

I had one lfs try to sell me all kinds of gigantic fish, and I had to keep reminding them that my tank wasn't large enough.

The new one I found hasnt given me any bad advise yet. He is actually very knowledgeable. Only bad thing is he acts like you are bothering him if you ask him questions, but he does answer them and correct.

I usually come here with any questions before going to the LFS

The manager at my LFS store told me that he likes cockfights, and he implied that he attends pit bull fights.

Its more annoying when they are also arrogant imo. I like to beast this sort out loud infront of their customers lol

I have 3 LFS near me 2 of them are pretty decent . The best 1 Ive gone to has closed they were bought out and are suppose to be building a bigger store ! Keeping my finger crossed they come back! Very helpful and knowledgeable!

if they have been bought out dont expect the good advice you got before lol

Im waiting to see ! They had big plans for there new store !

But advice depends on the amount of fishkeepers they employ. Generally staff are based on cost IME which sucks, experience is worth much more......

Fluviliatis ( sorry if spelt wrong) aka ceylon. I tell him everytime i am there to name them correctly but they dont listen. Also th 7" approx porcupine puff has serious ich, he says it comes and goes, i tried to explain but grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Worst LFS advice I've had: "Oh, you can fit at least 15 to 20 goldfish in that 46 gallon tank!"

Oh dear not what i would call ideal stocking levels! Maybe just over a 10th of that lmao i hate lfs advice

I am not quite sure what the worst thing a LFS has told me is, but these two are definitely on the list:
1. All freshwater fish are to be kept at PH above 7. For me who keeps mostly South American fish (except my puffers), that is almost like swearing.
2. The same LFS had newts (those axolotl things), which is illegal in Norway. I asked what it was, and they answered kribensis.
