Anything that advertises "less water changes", is pure garbage. How hard is it to change the water on a FW tank?

Anyone doing that sort of advertisement is a shyster IMHO.

First off, nitrate is inorganic, not organic, so they start out with an error, a.k. a. a lie.

Then they go into the biggest bunch of BS I have ever seen in my life. If your tap water is hard and alkaline you cannot use it for a planted tank? I have never had soft acid water in my very long hobby life. I started out in the 1940s and early 50s with planted tanks. They say you would have to buy DI water to use. Another lie and terrible advice. DI water is unsuitable to sustain life, either plant of animal without supplements, and it does not have a pH of 7.0, it is always acid from dissolved CO2 gas from the atmosphere. If you accept their babble and lies,I have an historic bridge you might be interested in buying...

Agreed. See through that stuff... it is vodka dosing. That is all. Plain and simple. I have one and have yet to set it up.

I will for the SW system, but not needed for FW.

As everyone will agree, when it comes to aquarium filters AquaClear is the best.

I have never tried Aquaclear before usually use Eheim, gonna buy one to satisfy my curiosity lol

Well, no, not everyone will agree at all. There are some of us with many tanks and no AquaClear in the house. For some of us, there are multiple filter formats in routine use, The "best" for any given tank varying significantly from tank to tank, and almost always requiring several different filters per tank.

But if I had to name just one brand, it would have to be Eheim.

Obviously, JMHO & YMMV.

Don't get me wrong I love Eheim(almost only use there heaters). Never have tried one of there filters though. The best HOB filter I have tried is AquaClear.

I am going to play devil's advocate here (but I haven't tried it out myself).

Vodka dosing does remove Nitrates, we all know that. I have one of these things and even dry it is HUGE and HEAVY. The flow rate is tiny and needs to be cycled just as much as any tank does (if not more).

So... now thinking .. (ignore the squeaky hamster wheel sound), could it be possible that this would act as a vodka dosing unit coupled with a remote deep sand bed style of filtration? Possibly with some sort of media in there to gather that anaerobic bacteria to create a full nitrogen cycle?

Dang, I'd love to cut it open and take pics, but want to test it out first
