Axolotl cool freshwater animal to own?

I recently found some pics of them online. They are very cool looking and look just as adoring as puffers.

I did some research and they require cold water, low current flow, nocturnal, diet consist of worms. I also youtube'd some glow in the dark axolotl.

What do you guys think? Would any of you buy it?

I would. We studied one of them in one of my vertebrate classes. They live a long time , require clean water.

What's cool about them, they're one of the few vertebrates to regenerate their limbs. I think.

They are even messier than puffers and not very easy to maintain as most filters dd add heat to the tank. I kept one long ago for some months but it was a PITA to me. I decided never again without an automated flow-through system - those are easy once tuned in, but a hassle to set and get balanced and not cheap to operate. If you want a challenge and enjoy engineering automated tanks, fine, but otherwise they are not great pets in my humble opinion. They are high on the oddball scale, but not much else.

They are not allowed to keep in Norway. But I've seen them for sale anyway.

They need cold water. No more than 72 degree F, but can't remember the exact number. I want to get a white one with black eyes from a breeder. He sells them for $20-$25 each plus $35 shipping accross the USA. They grow to about 1foot long including tail.

Price is really high. Not sure if I should get it though.

i have spent a lot of time looking into getting one of these. incredible to look at and difficult to keep.water temp should be 14-20c unlikely to live past 24c. also single specimen tanks are advised as they have cannibalistic tendancies. the more i look the more i want to take the challenge lol.

Yes, they are able to regenerate their limbs but please no one go cutting them off!

I too looked into getting one of these, but I would not without getting a chiller because my one tank without a heater averages 75°.
I believe they destroy plants, and do not like a strong current, but require heavy filtration.
I just figured setting up a coldwater hardscape species only tank would just be too much of a PITA, but, maybe one day.

I wanted one so bad! Notice WANTED. They are adorable! My LFS has them all the time. I originally set up my first tank for one last year and quickly realized I couldn't keep the water cold enough without a chiller. I can't afford to drop $$$ on a chiller...so I thought..1 1/2 years and 11 tanks later I could have bought a chiller many times over...lol! Somehow through doing AXie research I learned of some curious little fish known as dwarf puffers ;). It wad all over with after that. Ditched the 20 gallon got a 55 and set up my first puffer tank for my 8 lovely Dp's! Been hooked every since. Nothing better than a puffer IMO. Glad I never got one...even with my A/C going I can't keep my tanks below 80 degrees with texas' horrible heat wave this summer.

There are only 6 left...lost 2 to ip's a couple months back :(. They are all VERY interested in me. They rush the front of the tank everytime someone walks in the room. They are the most curious of all my puffs...too cute!!! I don't have any pics at the moment. The tank is now a lot more bare than it used to be. I slacked on caring for my plants and lost a lot. Other plants were moved to other tanks. I need to replant the tank and get it looking like it use to look :(
