Hello everyone I'm about to start buying and setting up an 80gal marine tank for my GSP. I do have a quick question though, and my question is this: Can I get another GSP and house him for about 3 months in the same 30gal while I set up the 80gal and raise the salinity in the 30gal?

I currently have a 30gal setup with only one GSP, SG 1.004 (just checked 5 mins ago). I'm slowly raising the SG in the 30gal with weekly water changes until the water is full salt. I am buying an 80 gal tank today and plan on setting up full marine with it. But I don't want to add the GSP(s) to the 80 gal until it's fully cycled and ready to go as a marine tank and they've been raised to marine SG lvls slowly in the 30gal.

I've got about 4 months to set up this 80gal, let me know if I can get another GSP. I would rather add the GSP now while they are both rather young and so they can get used to the salt increase together.

Thanks for the quick input guys! I'm going to have a lot more questions as time passes, as this is going to be my first marine tank. I would rather be safe, but I'm def interested in possible tank mates.

On the plus side though, if you're setting up a marine tank you will need liverock and that helps to cycle marine tanks quickly. And not only for lack of space but you might be better off adding both GSPs to the 80 gallon at the same time because neither will have established dominance and you may avoid problems that way.

If I wait and acclimate the GSP to salt in the 30gal that will give me time to get my 80gal salt established. with live rock etc. and not have to get another tank just to cure it. By the time the 30gal is at a high SG the salt will by cycled and ready for the GSP to be switched. I would love to get another puffer, but it seems things could get hairy.

It would really be caca if they started fighting.

Single specimen are more personable anyway.

Hello again everyone! Good news, I picked up my 80gal tank last night, and I only got it for 110$! It's 48 x 18 x 23, and glass. The guy that sold it to me was really rad, and had a huge Flowerhorn in his living room. That fish was so big I was almost intimidated by it.

Ok so now that I have the tank I get to start getting everything for the tank. I already have a stand picked out, it says it's for a 75 gallon aquarium, but I think I'll be ok.. I came across some live sand at PetSmart, 30$ for 20lbs straight from the Caribbean . As for Filters I was thinking about 2 Marineland Emperor 400's, I heard if you're doing FOWLR they work really well. I was also recommended Fluvals, but I'm not very familiar with those. I will also have a powerhead in the tank as well. Gonna get a few pounds of live rock for the puffer to nibble on so he can wear his teeth down. Gonna start looking for protien skimmers within the next day or two.

why do people do the no substrate thing? Looks like crap to me

Take the live sand back and just buy dry aragonite sand.

Just get powerheads and liverock, skip the emperor filters, lots of salt splash, higher nitrates, and they're really noisy!

I haven't bought the sand yet, but why shouldn't I get the live sand? I know the regular aragonite is cheaper than live sand. But I found live aragonite for almost half the price http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/p ... catid=7318...
