I have what looks like a bubble nest in my GSP tank. My GSP lives alone and my filter recently broke, but we replaced the filter within a matter of hours so the water quality was not badly affected. Now a few days later, I have something that looks similar to a bubble nest that I have only seen with bettas. Has anyone ever heard of GSP's ever making a bubble nest, or is there something else I should be looking for? Perhaps the new filter has just changed the current in his tank and the bubble are just being deposited on that side of the tank...I don't know. Help please.

It is more likely a film/biofilm on the water surface holding bubbles.

Does you tank have any surface current? If not, it would be a good idea to arrange for some, especially if you can do so without splashing. Surface films limit gas (including O2) exchange.

Sg is .95 and the filter was new. The bubbles have stopped now. Thanks.

I took my water to be tested by the lfs. I was told that anything slightly less than 1.001 was okay for the fish since I was still working him up to a brackish environment since he was in freshwater when I bought him. And he doesn't seem to be adversely affected by the water quality or the sg any.

thats impossible, .95 would be either higher than .026 by a LONNNGG SHOT and kill all fish in there..

.95 is less than 1.001 and higher than .026. Yes...but there's only one fish in my tank. And he's not a FW fish.

FW is 1.000, so you can't have anything below that. please do not listen to your LFS! Get your own hydrometer & test kits.

1.000 is freshwater and when you see .026 that is short for 1.026

As you add salt 1.000 is going to increase until you eventually get to marine conditions which is around 1.024-1.026ish.

Pet stores aren't helpful even though they may seem to be. Always keep that in mind.

Lots of folks argue as to what SW really is, But for me SW is 1.021 -1,025. Some folks argue for 1.018, which most marine fish will withstand well (inverts may or may not), but to be that is very high BW.

PP is correct. 1.000 is FW and nothing is less than that. Very highly purified water is still 1.000, but there are more zeros after the decimal than just three. Such water is not obtainable at home and is unsuitable for fish. There is no 0.95 on that scale.

Well, I got a Coralife Deep Six hydrometer from Petsmart since I was setting up my new 30 gal tank for my GSP. The SG is 1.014, and the nitrates, nitrites and ammonia were all a 0 so I moved my GSP to the 30 gallon today. Thanks for all the help.

What does your tap water measure using the Coralife hydrometer? My water out of the faucet seems to measure 1.002 on that specific hydrometer. I have yet to try a different brand, or take it to my LFS to get it checked.

If that tank was cycled, it would be showing some nitrate.
