This is my 5 gallon that has been running for just over a month. It's still cycling due to a mishap at the start of the cycle and has sort of stopped. My lfs are trying to find some dp's so that when my tank is eventually ready i can go get one from them.

I just wanted to post some photos of the tank as it is now; today i added a tiny java fern baby that my larger plant has been working on for a while. I also lost this tanks giant hygrophila the other day, it melted which was just disgusting. Luckily when i got it there was so much that i split it between two tanks and it's doing well in the other tank. Sorry if the pics are huge.





I'm busy modifying the light as the original light fixture it came with was creating too much heat. I've changed to LED's, but they only arrived today and i'm still trying to figure out how to set them up correctly.

I also set up a pond snail breeding tank. I'm guessing its roughly 4 gallons, i still need to get a filter for it but i've been doing twice weekly large water changes. the snails seem to like it and the population has grown a lot since the 6 i originally added.


They really like the wisteria and that mess around it is flakey food. I just changed the water and fed these guys before taking the pic.

I do have one question, what's the ideal temp for a dp?

Your tank is looking really good.

You can make a cheap sponge filter for that snail container. There are writeups all ove google on how to do it.

And a good temp is around 78ish i believe

Thanks. i think mine is high right now but i'm sure i set it high to promote the bacteria growth. i'll set it lower before i add any livestock.

Even though my DP went in to a new tank, the old rule of having a long established tank is still important.
If you have a friend who has a fish Tank which is disease free then get your mate to ring out the filter contents in to a bucket so you can put that in to your Tank. The filter gunk will be full of Bacteria which will boost the effectiveness of your Filter.

Unfortunately i don't have any friends with established tanks that are willing to let me do that. I have 1 friend with an established tank but right now she is being difficult so it's best i don't even ask.

The tank is cycling, i checked yesterday and the ammonia is around 0.25, the nitrites are at 1 and the nitrates are around 20. Hopefully it won't be long before the ammonia and nitrites are at 0 then i plan on waiting a little while to make sure there are no spikes or anything before i add any livestock. Plus my lfs are still trying to locate dp's they can bring in. it could be ages before i can even get one.
