Anyone know anything about goldfish. My GF is wanting a tank, and wants goldfish. I found a 72g bow front with stand, skimmer, uv ster, wet/dry, heaters, etc. he is asking 200 im offering 150 and he keep the skim, uv, see if it goes through.

But what are a pretty goldfish that will fit in a 72g for life. Also can I keep a bichir in there with them?

In a 72 gallon tank, if you wanted to keep just fancy goldfish, you can probably keep about 6 in there. The general rule for goldfish is 20 gallons for the first fancy goldfish, and 10 gallons for every additional goldfish after that. As for single tailed goldfish, it is 20 gallons for the first goldfish, and 20 more gallons for every additional fish, which means you could have 3 single tailed goldfish. You should not mix single tailed goldfish with fancy goldfish however because the fancy goldfish are much slower swimmers than the single tailed and will have a tough time getting food. Make sure to have plenty of filtration as goldfish can be very messy and definitely go for a bare bottom tank or a very thin layer of gravel to make cleaning easier. And while I have never used UV myself, I have heard a few goldfish keepers recommend it, notably Richard Hess (you can find some info from him on goldfishconnection.com or in his book Fancy Goldfish, which Dr. Erik L. Johnson also contributed to) so it may be something you would like to consider taking. I cannot imagine a fish 2x the size of my fist, that put outs as much waste as a GF, fitting into a 10g space. 30g ea, IMO (that's for adults)

I know the feeling about MFK over here but someone said that they arent as messy as people think, thats its no messier then any other fish its size. Any thoughts to that?

I know she had and loved Black Moors(?) back in the day, could I do 4-5 of them in a tank that size?

OK, the conservative has to chime in. I used to do GF big time, and as to 30 US gallons per GF is only for the non-heavy-bodied fish. The big Orandas and such I gave 50-75 gallons each. If you want them full sized and show quality, they need it. Largely herbivorous fish are actually messier than the carnivores such as puffers and many Cichlids. They are built for larger meals of less concentrated foods. Consider how messy a Scat or a Uaru can be. Scats are the messiest fish I have ever kept, far worse tha puffers or GF.

Any MFK so-called fish keeper who say that they are not messy belongs on that Forum, where the majority have no concept of how fish should be kept, and quite obviously do not care either. What they want to do always trumps good or even normal care of fish.

Plus I would never mix GF with any tropical.

Celestials and bubble-eyed GF should always be with their own kind only - not even other types of GF. They cannot compete and are so easily injured and seriously visually handicapped. Ditto for pearl-scales on the easily injured bit..

Unfortunately, they decided not to get GF. I tried to convince my friend to get the Celestial for his pond, that's what they were created for!
