can you guys name me some fish that tolerate brackish preferably higher levels of brackish and can some marine fish be put in to brackish

You mean to keep with puffers or just fish that are ok with brackish?

There are about 22000 species of fish, of which 5-10% off the top of my head, are brackish at some point in their lives. Of this, 0 are safe to keep with brackish puffers. At the LFS, favorite BW fish are scats, monos and archers (and puffers). There are many brackish species that are excellent in tanks and never seen in LFS (catch your own).

I think monos need marine as adults but they get pretty large.

BW fish that I can think of - scats, monos, archers...these guys can go full marine....as can SF mollies.

BW fish that stay in BW are BB gobies, knight gobies, dragon gobies.

Also, chromides, if you can find them...are low end BW cichlids.

I do not recommend putting any of these guys into puffer tanks. I was only listing off what BW fish I could think of.

what about an orange spotted goby they are in the marine section at my work whould they be good in high brackish water?

LL and crazy - what tank size do orange chromides require? I'm trying to get my wife interested in fish-keeping (or even inverts!); unfortunately she has no interest in puffers (nobody's perfect).

Polish, why do you ask? If you are looking for tank mates for your puffer, then you'll be looking at a larger tank than 30g for them. In a 20g, there is no room for any more fish, as it will be even too small for your puffer eventually, for swimming space & the bioload your puffer will put out.

I bred Chromides in a 20-long and in a 33XL, but water management was not easy in the smaller tank. A 30-long or 40-long would also be good. If you Val plant and go up s_l_o_w_l_y after the Vals are established, they will not totally arrest at 1.003

Thanks RTR. Which Chromides did you spawn? How do the orange compare with the blue-green? Any advantage to the extra width (front to back) of the "breeder" 30 and 40 gal. tanks? (The short height (16") makes me think I can get by with cheaper lights for plants - is that valid?)

None of those tank I listed are tall - which would be wasted with the Chromides (although not with the Val). I'm sure that I did not use over 2 WPG, as I rarely/never do for working tanks, which breeding tanks are. I like breeders, they are useful tanks, but I'm not sure they are really cheaper to light.

I worked with the Orange color morph then. Now I actually prefer the standard form - they are really elegant fish even if less obviously showy. My LFS recently got 6 in - perfect to set for pairing. It was sooo hard to resist. I kept repeating that I do not want water mods - and then would think some more...but I did resist.

You do know that they slime-graze like discus (but it is not as impotant with them)? That is mind-blowing to watch!

I have never been able to find chromides here...in the GTA. I would love to find some - but then...I'd need another tank...hmmm...

At the time I was really interested - I had a 75 to fill...which is no longer available. Still, I would love to see some live ones.
