The Puffer Forum

Hello everyone! I am new here to the forum and I came here to find out more about puffers, specifically some to put in my new 15 gallon tank. It is currently in the process of fishless cycling, so I still have plenty of time, but wanted to start thinking about stocking my tank. I have done some research and right now, the leading candidate is the Dwarf Puffer, but due to my lack of knowledge on puffer species, it is my only candidate. I would like to stick with freshwater puffers and would like a "wet pet" if possible. I would be more than happy with DPs (I believe I could have a max of 3 of those correct?), but am wondering if there are any puffers that I can keep alone in a 15 gallon tank. Thanks!

You could probably fit a figure 8 in there. I would recommend the dps though. I think three little puffers together would be and awesome and amusing aquarium.

15 Gallon is quite small but I think you could get away with fitting a few dwarf puffers or maybe a 1 - 2 Carinotetraodon puffers in there, for information on these smaller puffer species with pics can be found here in the pufferpedia:

yep, it seems easiest to start with dps then try something else if you have room for and want another puffer tank! they are what got me into puffers! good luck!

DPs are unique, but are an excellent introduction to puffers.

Well in that case, I'll go with DPs then. My plan for stocking is the following:

3 DPs
6 Otos
6-12 shrimp (I know this is a hit or miss, so I'll probably go with ghost shrimp)

Will this work?

maybe a 1 - 2 Carinotetraodon puffers in there

10g ea for those species other than DPs.

dead, first welcome.....second 3 dps sound good but that many oto's i think is to much. Plus you have to wait till your tank has been up and running for atleast 6 months if not a year or they will most likely starve to death. Very hard to get them to eat algae wafers, so you need a good source of algae already

yeah and you don't really need otos, ive always had bad luck with them so i gave up on trying to keep them. your dps probably wont bother the shrimp if you give the shrimpies hiding places or places to blend in really well and keep the dps well fed on other food. but try ghost shrimp first since theyre so cheap before going to amanos or cherry red or something.
