I might be getting a tank that is 150 x 40 x 40 .... around 50-60 gallon. It's kind of the only shape I can fit into my room and maximise on gallonage

Would a protein skimmer function well in such a 'shallow' tank? Would I need to put two at each end... or would one suffice? It kind of feels like having one would not reach all the areas of the tank effectively...


As a side question, would a GSP and takifugu niphobles get on together? Just curious

is that in inches or cm? cause if its in inches then youll have a 1000 gallon tank =D

They are cm. Roughly 60 gallon...

Is a sump out of the question? If not I would get and overflow with a sump and you will only need one skimmer. If a sump is out of the question I am sure you will be able to get by with just one HOB skimmer. Just make sure you have enough circulation pumps to move the water around.

I think that one skimmer is fine seeing as you'll need a lot of water flow anyways for the live rock

I would have to use that for FW. An ultimate tank for a fast-swimming small fish school. If it were 150x45x45cm it would be perfect. I got quotes once for a couple of such, but backed out on ordering them. Now I wish i had them.

It's going to be a FW now >_<! Mostly because it's in the living room now and it's what my parents really want... (think they're starting to dislike my puffer lol)

I would not be able to resist setting it for Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, Melanotaenia praecox. They are colorful, active to hyperactive and without picky needs Plant the ends with tallish plants (real or artificial) with a scattering of lowish plant between. Add a couple of brtistlenose plecos or dwarf Ancistrus plecos. They are happy with only moderately warm water. The mid-70sF are ideal.

If you wish to bred them, they are not difficult in slightly soft to moderately hard water in good condition, but the fry require infusoria. Several clumps of Java moss on wood posts will be use as spawning sites just about every morning. The same moss clumps will provide some infusoria such that some fry will survive even with the parents present. Best with 2-3 females per male, the whole school will swim together after spawning is done for the day.

With any luck, the bristlenose will breed as well in the same tank if provided with a couple of flatish rocks (larger than the cats) they dig under to span and males guard the eggs, or very shallow (substrate to roof) caves can also serve as spawning sites and refusges.

The Rainbows need secure covers as they tend to jump during spawning, and prefer decent current. Very easy, active and beautiful fish in largish groups.
