I have a brackish fish tank at a 1.005 SG, if I go higher it would at HIGHEST go at 1.010, do i need a protein skimmer? Also, im thinking about getting some sand, I have gravel right now... is sand worth it?

A skimmer would be useless in there. I suggest aragonite sand, about 1" layer.

for a one inch layer i would recommend 40 lbs min.

but for a skimmer you need a minimum 1.015 - 1.018 specific gravity
