Q about heater module for custom inline filter

Some of you may have seen that i talk a lot about custome filters and filter parts, and i have a question:
With my inline filter (pvc 3-4 modules and a 580gph pump) i want to have a module for a tank heater. Its not hard to make and i have the pieces but my question to you is would i need a heater rated for 40+ gallons to heat my 40 breeder or being that the module is thusly a module will a smaller heater work the same?
When i put it all together next week i will make a picture guide too =D
