I am working on setting up a new 90G tank. Need to buy filtration, building a 3D background etc. I have been deciding on what to put in this tank. (the other 90G will have african mbuna cichlids) I just love the puffers as well as my hubby and have been reading. What would you put in this tank? What kind of decor? Do people breed their own snails. Any helpful advice to send my way
Thanks!!

I cant wait to see how your background turns out. i would build a system of rocks and caves out of lava rocks and slate plates allowing for caves and such for hiding, with tall plants in the mix with grasses and small shrubs in the front. i personally would put cichlids in a tank that big, as i am a fan of pufers that dont get bigger than 5-7 inches so i cant help you there.
look around the web for using styrofoam for the 3-d backgrounds as you can get pretty creative ideas with them

Just to clarify, I am doing a wall unit with two 90 g tanks so I can have different species of fish. I am doing Mbuna cichlids in one tank and was looking for something for the other 90g. Really thinking hard about puffers or one large puffer??

A 90g would be great for two GSP's as LNG as you wouldn't mind going full marine in the future.

The larger FW puffers won't fit into a 90 unfortunately. I agree a couple GSPs would do well in there, a ceylon, some F8s or mid sized FW puffs. If you go SW then you have a lot more choices. Tobys!!

What are the tank requirements for a fahaka? There is one at my pet store and I can watch him for hours
Can you mix the green spot with a f8 or do you keep like species together??
I am going to have to look into adding salt for brackish and eventually full marine, Not sure how complicated that would be for me or if I need any extra equipment etc.

You cannot keep F8s and GSPs together. If you get a GSP you will need to go full salt eventually. F8s CANNOT go full salt, they like low brackish water.

Fahakas gets too large for a 90, and some of them get all discomboberated if you upgrade their tank later on. Some don't eat for weeks.
Since green spotted puffers are not reef safe, the lack of corals will make the fish only with live rock (FOWLR) salt water set up less complicated.
Do some research online, hopefully someone has some good links, salt water is definitely not as scary as it seems. Mine are way less maintenance than my planted freshwater tank.
Also, I really love green spotted puffers, and tobies have some of the best colors.

I have just setup a 90g with the thoughts of a ceylon/GSP and going full marine as they grow. I think that would be a great idea for you. And I started my own ramshorn sanil breeding tank. They are like rabbits, its crazy.

I currently have a small 5g with guppies in it so could breed snails. So I should have some live rock?? Do I have to get a protein skimmer etc? What type filtration for a 90g brackish, eventually SW?

Start the tank at the SG the GSPs are in now & eventually move them up to SW. then you'll want the live rock & skimmer. Check out the GSP article in our Library.

How long would you say it takes to be full on sw? Is it just slowly adding more salt? Would I be able to use the same filters I have now? Marine c530 and a ac 110 hob ?

You could go the way of just adding a few tbsp extra salt every week or you could go this way:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19348
When you get >1.018, you'll want to change your filtration over to live rock, good flow & a decent protein skimmer.
