The Puffer Forum

After a long awaited fishless cycle, I special ordered 2 Green Spotted Puffers from a respected LFS. When I got them about 4 weeks ago, they both appeared to be GSPs. However, Im not so sure about one of them now. Bubbles, the one in question has spotting similar to a GSP, but on the top of his head it appears to have a marking similar to what you would find with a F8. After doing a bit of research, I came across the Topaz puffer. Is it possible that is what he is? or am I dealing with a F8? If you have a moment please see attached photo. I would really like to be sure what type of puffer he might be.

I agree 110% with bigfatfish. GSP with a stripe.

It is clearly a GSP with one giant unibrow!

GSP, I have one with a spot like that except his spot is shaped like a pufferfish. Also by Topaz do you mean Ceylon?

Aww, it is one of those GSPs with almost symmetrical spots on the top of him..

thanks guys. just wasn't sure. never seen a GSP with that marking before.

Would you consider Bubbles to be less aggressive?

Yes they are the same, topaz is just another name for the ceylon

Bubbles is a juvi...his behavior now is not an indicator of his future behavior

I was just asking because it seems as though the ones with the larger and fewer spots seem less aggressive than the ones with more and smaller spots. Sorry to stray off topic.

I thought you were asking because sometimes ceylons are thought of as less aggressive than GSPs *occasionally!*.

I am not sure if one variant of GSPs are less aggressive than another, especially when they age.
I used to think the saba looking ones were a bit more friendly, but I am finding that one variety is just as aggressive as the next...especially when it involves territory or food.

I guess looks have nothing to do with it. I know someone said they had one for years, sweet gentle little guy, one of their mandarine dragonettes landed on him while darting around grazing, didn't even move.
Puffers have such unique personalities!

I guess it depends on the personality of the puff. One puff would eat the mandarin, another puff enjoys the mandarin's company

I would say that a GSP's aggression depends on the type of other fish also. I have had better luck with certain species more than others. I have seen a lot of tank mate aggression though, so I don't keep other fish with my GSP anymore.
