The Skilter 400?

As some may know, I've been saving for a saltwater setup. The other day I was at a fish store and saw an interesting piece of equipment. It was a Skilter, a hang on filter with a built in venturi skimmer. Has anyone used this, I wondering if this is a saltwater miracle or a piece of junk.

it looks like a standard HOB filter on steroids.
The bio filter probably won't be nessessary as the live rock would take care of that. Not exactly sure how the "skimmer" portion wold work. It looks like there is not a floating portion that would actually skim the water.

So probably efficient as a HOB filter, but not as a skimmer?

I'm just going by the pic provided in the sales doc. Seeing it in action is a totally different story

I used to own a skilter 250 on a 20 gal mini reef and have to say they are not that bad of a filter and skimmer. My dad has a Skilter 400 on his (used to be a saltwater tank) freshwater 30 gal long that has done a great job for over 8 years (1 1/2 years freshwater) now without any problems. So these HOB filters can work on saltwater or freshwater, just remove the skimmer and the collection cup for freshwater set-up

I think I should try the 400 in combination with a sump for my 55g. I plan to get soon.

They're crap. If you really want a nice HOB skimmer/sump/fuge in one, how about this? All you need is a pump:

Good call. I was a little skeptical of this filter, but not knowing thought it was worth a shot. I haven't really heard anything good about this filter. Then again, I had never heard of it.

You do not need a biofilter in a SW tank w/LR, so why buy one. I'd prefer a real skimmer to an unneeded combo unit.

It originally sold for <$300. I'd like $100 + shipping.
