I understand a 4gal is too small for a figure eight puffer. I only intend on having it in there for a few month then upgrading. But in the mean time is a AC70 ok or is it too strong?

Thats to small for more then a day. A few months and your F8 will be most likely be stunted if it lives at all

But yes I would say that an AC70 would be to much current in a 4g

A few months in a 4g. is too small for too long of a period of time IMO. Craigslist may have some tanks available that are a more appropriate size.

An AC70 filtering a 4gal would way too much overkill.

Remember, filtration just hides the waste, it doesn't get rid of it. That's what water changes are for. Wait to get one until you have at 15+gal tank. They're very common so I'm sure you'll be able to get one once you have the proper setup

I have my 2" F8 in a 30g with an AC110. He is doing very well. I know he'll need a larger tank as he grows up.

The smallest tank I have put an AC70 on is a 10G. I put a sponge over the intake, and it worked great.

With puffers, I either cover the filter intakes and regularly clean the intake sponge, or else turn off the filter during feeding. Meaty foods stuck in the filter are NOT very good for water quality, and the more powerful your filter, the more of a problem you'll have with it sucking food in before your puffer can get it.

An AC70 is way too strong for such a small space. It would be like placing the F8 in a whirlpool.
A filter provides a protected environment to grow specialized bacteria that convert harmful waste products(Ammonia) into less toxic forms(Nitrite then Nitrates). WC's are just to remove the less toxic form (Nitrates).
In theory you can't have too much filtration,....however your puffer would most likely perish from the stress associated with living with the strong currents an AC70 would produce in such a small tank.

I suggest waiting until you can get a larger tank if possible. If you have already purchased the fish and can't get a larger tank right away then at least get a smaller filter until you can.

I had an AC110 on my 20g with the modestus. Big piece of moponi wood & lots of anubius.
