I fed my puffer some freshwater ghost shrimp 2 weeks ago in my brackish water tank the SG is 1.015 but yesterday I noticed three still alive. Any ways my question is how long can ghost shrimp survive in brackish water because i was told only a couple days but obviously this isnt true. Just a little curious about this becasue it might be kind of nice to have a small clean up crew for my puffer

ghost shrimp only breed in BW....I had some in my low-end BW tank for 2 years til my F8 realized they were food

I had about 30 Ghost Shrimps in my BW tank a year ago - I have one left now (eaten, not died!). SG up to 1.020 & he is fine & avoiding capture!

^^ can they survive in SW too, because i know there is a ghost shrimp that is strictly SW?

As prev stated, if they live long enough they may just start breeding for ya

Ghost shrimp are a physical description, not a species.

Here in my part of the country (East Coast) the ghost shrimp we see as feeders are from the Gulf Coast and commonly are any of 3-5 different species, all of which breed in BW to SW, but at least one of them can and will breed in FW. Sometimes there are smallish pretty clear Macrobrachium (longarm) shrimp included, but they are not really "ghosts".

I added a sump yesterday & started skimming - definitely SW now!

My ghost shrimp have successfully bred in fw. I have managed to keep thebanues alive for about two weeks now. I'm still shocked that they are still alive!

There is a lot of misinformation out there about "Ghost Shrimp".

As stated above... Ghost Shrimp is not that useful in ID'ing the animals. sort of like saying "Brown Dog".

Around here I have Palaeomonetes paludosus exclusively (AFAIK). ID is not always easy. They do come from the freshwater ponds and what not around here... and are all wild caught. I've done lots of research and close examination... and I can confidently state that I can't tell the difference most of the time.

Idon't think anybody who is not a taxonomist with experience on shrimps can do much w/ID on ghosts. I certainly cannot. we get some Macrobrachium contaminants with the Ghosts periodically,and I can sort those out.

The only way I can tell if I have the "right" species for FW breeding is by egg size and successful settling out of the fry quickly post-release. Pure pragmatism.
