F8's color

I was just wondering why my F8's patterns, especially the black marks, get darker or fade to a lighter color. Is there a reason why this happens?

Moody puffer. Usually lighter when sleeping.

+1 to PP's comment. Puffers do show their mood and alertness with color changes.
