Has anyone come across an idea...

of setting up an environment whereby a puffer could travel from fresh water to brackish to marine environment with the limitations we have in aquariums
(or even if its only (sg 1.005 to 1.015 )brackish to marine)

Has it ever been done....


Obviously you can set up 3 different tanks that has fresh, brackish and marine to ensure that the sg levels do mix together

BUT the ,major hurdle is how do allow the puffer to get to one tank to the other when they feel like it.... (not when we think its right)

If this can be done ... I wonder if this would ensure breeding success for Brackish/Marine Puffers (understanding that there are other numerous factors to consider)

I don't remember where I read about it, but some German dude has an article somewhere online in German about breeding GSPs by simulating there changing environment, including the monsoon season.

Yes, this has been done although for other fishes. I saw it with mollies. The tank had 3 vertically glued in sheets of glass (similar to dividers, with about 10 cm distance between each of them). The left one reached from above the water level to about 4 cm above the bottom. The middle one from the bottom glas to about 4 cm below the water level and the right one was glued in just like the left one. Freshwater and saltwater in this tank were divided due to their different gravity, they mixed very little in the area between the vertical glasses (practically no current). Worked suprisingly well, only water changes were difficult and limited to small amounts at a time. Could basically work with 2 glasses as well.

I can pretty much picture your description, but still cant picture how the fish can go from fresh to salt in their own accord...??

hmm wonder if theres any on youtube or something might spend a bit of time there hehe

The left and the right glass divider don't reach the bottom and the middle one does not reach the water level. So the fish can swim below the first two ones mentioned and above the latter one to the other side and vice versa. The way they have to go looks like a "W". At least the mollies got the idea pretty well and made use of it. This is a system I will try at some point in the future with specific moray eels. Haven't seen this on youtube, but who knows maybe something like that is there.
