We have dinner guests coming and I have to go help clean so I'll tell you guys more about it later, but I'M MOVING TO A NONPROFIT FARM IN INDIANA IN A FEW WEEKS!!! I'll live there for at least a year!

Will you be able to finish college there?

Well, cleaning didn't take as long as I'd expected.

I could go to another school part-time, but that's not what I plan on doing. I'll be one of the first college students/recent high school grads to live and work there while going to school or while taking a break to learn something new (sustainable agriculture). I'll start a beehive, help build a greenhouse, work on reconstructing a barn, start garden beds that haven't been farmed for decades, etc. We already have chickens, and we hope to get goats! I'm leaving in mid- to late January.

Unfortunately, I feel like this constant moving and these new longer trips are unfair to my fish. I'm adopting Thumbelina to my good friend Julee. Thumby's planted tank will stay at my house with the shrimp and otos. That bioload is low enough and there are enough plants that my mom can maintain that tank on her own (feeding, topping off), and I can do water changes when I visit every month or so. My young female betta recently developed a tumor or abscess on her face, and I don't think she's long for this world. Two or three more days, at most. If she makes a recovery, she'll go with Julee. The Sulawesi biotope will go to Julee or Dadof4. The assassin snails will come with me, as will Vlad and a 10g tank, plus some triops eggs.

There's no Internet access at the farm. I won't be online much. There's not even T-Mobile coverage, so there goes my cell. We might be able to hook up some dial-up at some point, who knows. I guess I just might not be on here much for a while.

It sounds really extreme, but I think God's pointing me in this direction, and I know this is a huge opportunity for me...

allycat, I don't really know. We went there today, but I forgot to ask the name of the town... Oops! It's forty minutes from Louisville.

That sounds very exciting and definitely pretty extreme. I know I would love it if I could bring my horse along ;) It is going to be such a lovely break from school, it really does take a lot out of you.

I'm sure many people will worry that you won't go back to school but it's really up to your disposition and goals. If school is right for you then you'll do it, if not then you won't.

Good luck with your adventure :D It sounds lovely.

I can agree that a break from school can be SO necessary..even if you are going to spend your free time as slave labor  Sometimes I think I would rather clean up horse stalls than finish an essay!

May I ask what degree/s are you going for and will this break do anything to help your pursuit of education? Is it something you can put on a job application?

I'd pretty much always prefer to clean a stall  Unfortunately that is not a good way to plan to spend the rest of your life ;)

Have you done this type of work before or is this something new?

I've done it, but not full-time - just a day here and there.

I'm a theatre major with a focus in tech and education, but I plan to be a farmer, so this is at least getting me closer to my ultimate goal. I can definitely put it on a job application - it's an "internship" with a nonprofit organization.

I lied - it was 25 minutes from Louisville, not 40.

I'm making arrangements to ship my little girl to Connecticut in two weeks. Breather bags (no air bubbles, no oxygen running out!), insulation, two-day heat, and express shipping for my baby. :(
