Are there any species of fish that anyone knows of that can live in FW with a Ph of 10.5 - 11?

What about those loaches in those springs in Scandanavia that pick the skin off your feet, wouldn't that water probably be pretty hard?

Lake Tanganyika has a ph of 9.0-9.4 or higher. Wow I did not know fish can live at a high ph of 10.5-11. If this is true then I myself will have to do alittle reseach also. Man, that's crazy.

I can't help but ask why?

Definitely not Scandinavia. Not many fishes you can keep in tanks comes from Scandinavia.

There is an African Rift Lake with ultra high alkalinity,which I have forgotten the name of, and there are some endemic Cichlid living there. But I have no idea if they are of a scale to be kept in captivity and I am certain that I have never heard of them being in the trade.

Well in our quest for a new home, we are considering moving back to Japan. I found a little 2 bedroom house there for $18,500 CAD. By my standards it is small and run dow, in the middle of the mountains, BUT (and it is a big BUT) it comes with its own certified hot spring! Free hot water! Free geothermal heating! People here would kill for that!

There are mountains on 3 sides with Mt Fuji 30km (as the crow flies) directly to the east.

So ... I was wondering what could be kept in there I know there is a Lake in Nikko that has a very high Ph and apparently trout were successfully introduced. I am sure that Ph was buffered with rain run off to vs pure hot spring water.

Oh WOW! Japan! I want to see pics if you decide to move there . African Rift Lake Tanganyika is the the only lake or body of water that has tons of fish that lives in it naturaly with one of the highest ph levels, that I know of.

Yea, I kind of do crazy stuff But this is a RETURN to Japan not a new experience.

I'll be looking into native species and inverts. This particular location is just one of several options. There were other better options for housing, but the geothermal was my big attraction.

The final location will depend on how much we can afford, but this site is fairly attractive.

The African Rift is loaded with soda lakes - think of the flamingos' feeding grounds... But quite a few of those lack much in the way of vertebrate aquatic life.

That is what I was thinking too. There are lots of neat "critters" that can tolerate it, but I didn't know about the fish. I also understand that there is a variety of SW shrimp that can take the high temps and high Ph but apparently they don't breathe O2. Can't remember exactly what it was but it is toxic for us O2 breathers.

just an update. No, we won't be getting that property.

Apparently the house is on one side of the street and the well is located on the other. We'd have to run the piping under the road. ummm ok..... not going to happen in our time frame and budget.

It would have been nice though.
