Spankin new all acrylic tank, foot print of 72x30x30, 2-3 FX-5's for filtration, one of those awesome looking 3-d backgrounds. Would still cheap out on the substrate and get sand like I have. Tons of live plants. And all this for just bloat. Oh and a pimp stand with shelving and hooks to hold everything

u can use 2500 towards your remodeling that leaves you 7500.

well i guess nobody likes to take a shot at scratch offs lol.myself i think that i would go kinda conservative.upgrade puffs current abode upgrade filtration-live rock protein skimmer all the rocks caverns to keep him curious...if he has a 10-15 yr life i would like to be able to keep it up for him!my mollie tank well i would kinda redo that i dont like the tank they dwell in to much-so just go up to 75g do a estruary biotope for those guys cool but managable.now i have to finish my indoor pond!just a little upgrading all i need for them also..they have 60g-go up to 100g...another fish that could live long if treated right.i have the room to do a nice planted water garden..its just inside!!!!!oh oh oh oh yeah i would need to do a nice sw snail tank,those astrea snails i love um,dont like slugs..ugh nasty but water snails seem so graceful in their little lives.ok well long story-short some upgrades nothing fancy good maintenance equipment keep current finny friends happy

I would get a 120 gallon, glass, rimless, with all the high-tech planted tank equipment, pressurized Co2 system, which new can be $300, some crazy awesome lights, probably $200. And get super fancy driftwood, amazing plants, and spend the rest on orange eyed black tiger shrimp, which are like $90 each.

Oh ya once I won $5 on a scratch off game or whatever they're called. Haha, I bought two more with that but lost those both

Anybody who is an old fogy does not really give a rip what a setup cost to start. Who cares if it is Oceanic and had all the latest bells and whistles? If you cannot afford the upkeep the tank will go down the tubes. Initial investment plus 10 years operating costs (what do those high-tech lights cost up-front plus annual operating costs?) is the only rational basis for getting a new set-up.

That applies whether you are talking about found money (BTW, you neglected to deduct the taxes you have to pay on those scratch-off winnings - how come so many folks never seem to realize just how much bite there is in local, state, and federal taxes - including sales tax)) of just in-account leftovers. The majority of my equipment is old to most hobbyists (over ten years, which I assume is the life expectancy of most equipment for me), so all I spend now is operating and some up-grade costs. I do know what that adds to the monthly bills, and plan on it as a future obligation - which has to be covered.

I don't want to have fish and not be able to feed myself, thanks anyway. Everything has a life-cycle cost. You might as well plan on it before you buy that new tank.

in a bowling league one night a guy won 50K from the scratch off machine! i wish i was that lucky. i play the $5 or $10 once in a while to try my luck. usually get the money back or down 10. so i dont do them very often. one day though im going to find out how many are on a roll and just buy a whole roll of $5 or $10 tickets to see how i make out

RTR we all understand what you are saying but this is just a fun thing, nothing serious

For whats its worth, when I got started in this hobby I had no inkling how much it would eventually add up to for upkeep and maintenance to do the time I have invested justice (for lack on a better word coming to mind) My aquarium keeping gives me a an odd satisfaction that is totally worth the price, but had I seen numbers before I started I would have thought harder about it.

Back to dreaming about imaginary money, I'd totally build my tank into the wall. It would be so awesome...

actually building a false wall is very easy.

the part I don't get about that idea is how to control the humidity. I know you have to use bathroom rated dry wall (green), but you will still get white fungus on the insides without proper ventilation and air circulation.
