Yalls thoughts

Got a buddy at work that is big into the SW side of things. We were talking the other day and I was telling him that i wanted to get into the sw side myself. That I was setting up a 10G tank that i was going to set up. Now all I have for that is the tank and a 20g filter nothing else. He stopped me the other day and told me he had a 10g tank that he had as a SW tank at one time that had everything, oversized filter, powerhead, sand, a 100+ dollar light, just no LR and he would sell it all to me for 75 bucks. Does that seem like a good deal to yall. Seems good to me since the light is hardly used and could be worth around that by itself, but I want yalls opinions

What is the light? Depending on that and without the LR that sounds kind of high.

Im not to sure about the light, He did tell me that he had corals growing in the tank.

Seems a little high, but if its a good light that alone can be worth 75.

What is the light unit? Metal Halide or a power compact T5 fluorescent?
If you can rig some sort of FW top up system, just thinking of Florida in the summer, that should work. If you have a decent pump to deliver 10-20x the tank volume for any live rock. And cooling - pop bottles full of ice might work in a tank that small. Dare I say it - a hang on skimmer might work. One of the 'normal' size ones, maybe?
Inverts, mainly I assume? (10g).
Or you could put a baby painted frogfish in for a while (needs 20g at least), if fish only. Those are not really 'beginners' fish but I'm sure you'd manage because they are pretty much like puffers in needing good water, mature filters and coaxing to feed
I have no idea why I just went 'Frogfish' instead of 'Dwarf goby' or 'just keep inverts'!

alright filter is a marineland HOB, he wasnt sure exactly what type off the top of his head. Ive got a whisper C HOB that is for a 20g tank if I need it.
Light is a current usa housing with a dual actinic/dual 10k power compact
Was run for 4-5 months at his house, then was moved to his wifes work for 6ish months. He pulled the LR and water out and put it aside. Still has the sand in the bottom

Dont believe I will need to cool it.. Dare I say it - a hang on skimmer might work. One of the 'normal' size ones, maybe?

Yes mainly inverts maybe 1 fish

Trust me with those Power Compacts it gets warm, but if you have good ventilation and dont keep the house warm then you might be ok. The biggest concern you will have IMO is water evap. The salinity will change really quick in such a small tank with evaporation.
I still dont know what I would do about the filter. If I was to run it wouldnt have the normal filter media just very mature live rock rubble. You still might want to check into a nano powerhead to keep from getting dead spots in the live rock.

I may just buy parts of this guys setup, the lights and the powerhead that he has. I really dont need another tank LOL.
Evap is something that Im worried about. Can I just add FW when the tank starts to get low?
