skinny gsp?

Oh no! Sick fish?! Come here and see if someone can help!

Read this before posting!!

Since this board has been up, we have found there are several questions that routinely get asked in order to help diagnose problems. If you can have that information to begin with in your post, we'll be able to help right away (if we can!) without having to wait for you to post the info we need.

1) Your water parameters - pH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrates and salinity (if appropriate). This is by far the most important information you can provide! Do not answer this with "Fine" "Perfect" "ok", that tells us nothing. We need hard numbers.

2) Tank size and a list of ALL inhabitants. Include algae eaters, plecos, everything. We need to know what you have and how big the tank is.

3) Feeding, water change schedule and a list of all products you are using or have added to the tank (examples: Cycle, Amquel, salt, etc)

4) What changes you've made in the tank in the last week or so. Sometimes its the little things that make all the difference.

5) How long the aquarium has been set up, and how did you cycle it? If you don't know what cycling is read this: Fishless Cycling Article and familiarize yourself with all the information. Yes. All of it.

We want to help, and providing this information will go a LONG way to getting a diagnosis and hopeful cure that much faster.

While you wait for assistance:
One of the easiest and best ways to help your fish feel better is clean water! If you are already on a regular water change schedule (50% weekly is recommended) a good step to making your fish more comfortable while waiting for diagnosis/suggestions is to do a large water change immediately. Feel free to repeat daily or as often as you can, clean water is always a good thing! Use of Amquel or Prime as a dechlor may help with any ammonia or nitrite issues, and is highly recommended.

Note - if you do not normally do large water changes, doing a sudden, large water change could shock your fish by suddenly changing their established water chemistry. Clean water is still your first goal, so in this case, do several smaller (10%) water changes over the next day or two before starting any large ones.

skinny gsp?

Post by poopybarkflounder »

Hello everyone!
i was just wondering if my new gsp (ive had him around a month, im thinking he isnt older than a few months) is too skinny? I feed him every day skipping one day a week. im currently feeding him blood worms, brine shrimp, and pond snails. i give him enough to make his tummy rounded.
my concern is that he doesnt seem to be as plump as the other gsps ive seen. here are some pictures (sorry for quality) its hard to tell, but does he seem too thin? and if so how can i fix it?

he does look a little emaciated.

After feeding how long does it take for him to get like that? What color is the poop?

I have a feeling it is IPs ...and possibly should be moved to the "hospital section"

an hour? that quickly? Off to the emergency room for this thread :)

Try soaking the food in an IP treatment for a full course and see what happens after. And watch that poop!!

the mods will move it for you.

They will read this and make the move.
For now we will need:
Water quality:
Ammonia readings
Nitrite Readings
Nitrate Readings

and the tank history including water change schedule.

The diet seems a little lacking but that will be cleared up in a bit.

Water quality:
Ammonia readings:0
Nitrite Readings:0
Nitrate Readings:0

i fishless cycled the tank and do a weekly water change of around 50%

i was planning to introduce salt tomorrow actually. i know i should have done it sooner but right after i bought him money got really tight so i had to put it off until tomorrow. i didnt think that would be any harm and i surely hope that it wasn't.
and they're isnt any live rock in the tank.

He has classic signs of internal parasites. Pinched look, belly goes flat quickly after eating, stress signs (dark and listless). As long as he's still eating you need to start treatment for IP's. Best way to do that is by soaking his food (bring the treatment right to the parasite) in Jungle Fizz Tabs and garlic, they both work on the IP's and the garlic has the benefit of being an appetite stimulant. Break the fizz tabs up in to 1/3's to treat the food.

When you took your readings on your water had you just done a WC? With any cycled tank you should have some nitrates showing, they are the end result of the nitrogen cycle. The other reason for showing 0 nitrates is not following the directions on the test kit exactly (done it myself). If you don't shake the reagents the specific times and follow the exact times listed for adding them you can get negative results. This applies to the nitrite test too. Re-test your water and post the readings again. Also answer all the questions listed above so we can give more precise guidance.

he meant to treat the food..

Get a coffee cup, fill it 3/4 with water.. put in food in. blood worms or whatever..then cut off 1/3 of a tab and put in the water with food and tank water..

Let fizz for 20 minutes..

Take food out and feed
