Hey all I have a new 55g that I am trying to level with a carpenter's level. It's showing that it's back heavy or my floor just leans that way. What should I use underneath the stand to level it more? I feel like wood might split or be too weak but I just don't know. What have you guys used in the past?

Wood isn't weak in this application - breaking wood by crushing it with pressure is nearly impossible.

Do you recommend plywood? Only the back part isn't level with the floor. How do you suggest adjusting just the back? What about using shims? Does anyone have experience with that?

I have used metal shims, but also pieces of Formica from a cabinet-maker friend (out-of-date samples - they are dense and quite compression-resistant). it all depends on how much physical adjustment is needed and you can get a decent idea of that by shimming the level on the top of the tank on the stand. That will not be perfect, but close.

A good level is essential IME.

I use books I don't read anymore lol

I use wood shims. Drive them in carefully and check the level ever do often. When you are level you can snap off the remainder of the shim sticking out.
