Hard foods for DFP

Hi I have a small 1 1/2 inch dog-faced puffer in a 55 gallon and I was wondering what I should feed him for hard foods? I've tried mussle but he just eats the soft parts because he is so small. I have uncooked shrimp with the shell on that he eats but I don't think that's hard enough to keep his teech in check. My main question is could I feed freshwater snails to him or would that be bad?
Before anyone flames me for having a tank too small for this fish when he is an adult, I know. I plan on upgrading accordingly and I don't think they grow very fast so I should be ok until I hit summer so I can buy a big shiny new one (or used).
