So a friend and I were talkin about feeder cones at work. They had a few packs - and gave me a pack of 4. Reading the back made me laugh a little though, as it says "One Pyramid will feed 15-20 average-sized aquarium fish in a 10 US. Gallon tank for 3-4 days."

It makes me wonder what they consider average sized fish, and how they got them all happily fitted into a 10g tank.

My friend insisted I check into it for my cichlid and rainbow shark. They use them apparently with some of their cichlids. IDK?

NIMFT (= Not In My Fish Tanks). Captive fish are commonly grossly over-fed and mis-fed. Feeding fish is not hard, but apparently the hardest thing for folks to learn - I am still working on it myself.

As for the package instructions, those are likely appropriate for the those so-called feeders that just may well be the stock in an average 10 gallon tank, and is a big part of why so many folks take up fish-keeping and drop out after a relatively short time of keeping an overstocked, badly stocked, and overfed and under-maintained tank. It is sad. It depresses me.

Thanks RTR, I was thinking it definitely would be a lot of food. I've never seen my friend's tanks... However they have a lot of them.

I've tried a feeder cone but this works best for me...



12" tweezers and an 18" piece of rigid airline attached to a syringe. The syringe is good for picking up poop too.

that syringe scares me!! LOL!! it looks like something a doctor stuck up my nose once when I was overseas! Quite painful!

I think Im going to try to syringe idea for getting poop out, sucks having to stick my hands in with my net to get it out

I thought feeder cones were worm dispensers??

Yup, me too on the cones. Those blackworm feeders I do have and use in quantity.

I admit that I coined NIMFT, many years ago here on TPF and several other sites (when I was more active on-line). Back then, I gave its meaning routinely. Now I do so rarely, as all but newcomers already know it.

FWIW (= For What Its Worth, not mine, but an aquarium mag column heading) Don't count on that syringe for anything past really small puffers. Adult fahakas and T.mbu "packages" will not even fit in the Python tubing - you have to use the gravel washing tube or a customed intermediate diameter tube. But getting those packages out before they break up is great for water quality.

Actually the only thing I feed with the syringe are cories in my community tank and BBGs in my brackish. In addition to picking up F8 poop it works good for blowing debri out of dead spots.
