The Puffer Forum

Hello, I am new to the forum. I found these puffers at my LFS. They were named "pygmy puffers." They look like two species, a figure eight and a green spotted, but the worker denied that it was. Could someone help me ID them? The pictures are from a cell phone, so they are not that great. I took a bunch, so hopefully you'll be able to ID them from at least one of them. They looked to be between 2-3 inches. Thanks!

If those puffers are indeed 2-3" long, then they can't be pygmy puffers or dwarf puffers as we refer to them. Dwarf puffers are rarely much more than an inch, possibly 1.5" but certainly not 2-3".
Hopefully you can get some pictures uploaded and we can give you an ID for sure.

Those sure look like DPs to me...And a few look extremely skinny.

Are they as big as a man's thumb, or as small as 1/3 of a man's pinky finger?

Look like Dwarf Puffers to me as well.

Well I have never seen DP's as large as these. The smallest was definitely 2-inches.

They are extremely malnourished. The LFS is not that great to them. On a positive note, they didn't kill each other over the 2 weeks that I have seen them there, despite always looking underfed.

If those dwarf puffers truly were 2" long, then I'd say they are super duper dwarf puffers! I think anything over an inch would be odd.

They have several distinct dwarf puffer features, but I don't see red eyes - perhaps some kind of jumbo member of the Carinotetraodon genus?

If they are a giant Carinotetradon, I'd snap up a couple.

See I see two distinct types of puffer. The lighter yellow one in the foreground definitely has the markings of a DP, but I assure you it was rather large. The other four puffs are much darker in markings. Perhaps next week I will venture there again and try to get movies of them.

Where are they located?

The LFS is Petland in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is a chain that is known for its puppy mill dogs. That notwithstanding it is one of the better places in Baton Rouge for freshwater fish of a non petsmart/petco variety.

I was just curious even though I doubted it was in my area, but I thought somebody else might go in and check them out.

But I would love to see them for myself.
