The Puffer Forum

I've been researching SAPs and really thought I would get a few when I could find them but I went into the LFS and they had 2 puffers simply labled as Redeye puffers. They guy said that they didn't get any scientific name with them and he did his best to id them. I don't know what kind of puffers these are and haven't done much reading up on redeyes, if that turns out to even be what they are. I'm hoping for a little help with the id and advice if one would be appropriate for my tank. Both are around 2.5 inches.

Current setup is 75 gallon with:
6 tiger barbs
4 corydoras
1 dwarf gourami
1 pleco
1 siamese algae eater

Is that big spot by his tail, red or black?

I'd definitely call the spot by the tail black, not red.

It maybe just an affect of the camera phone, but the snout seems long???

WIth such an obvious target spot it's a M. cochinchinensis in my opinion. I think the snout is short, but a clear side shot would help to clarify that.

No the red spot is a "can have", not a "must"

Thanks for the info. Think I better pass on picking this guy up...not ready to find new homes for everyone else in there.

These guys are close to Indianapolis if there is anyone else interested.

Darnit, why can't I find a Fang's? That's the one puffer I'd still like to have!
