Basically i go to car boot sales/jumble sales and picked up some protein skimmers and some other bits and bobs on the cheap -

question is - do i go for it - or stick with what i know with freshwater ?

I am having the same debate


I have a feeling I'm going to go for it. It will be an interesting learning curve.. and more experience Go for it

arrgghh lol - i just chucked two of the protein skimmers on ebay - so hopefully they will sell

Ive kept the biggest baddest looking protein skimmer a min - i checked out the new price on it and its £169 so thats nearly 300 dollars ish

Yes, I would absolutely go marine, if you have the money for it. I am planning to do it too. As you say: you can learn an awful lot from it. And who can resist tanks like PP's?

Definitely go marine autophotos u wont regret it. Sooo much fun and if I can do it you can. Its not that hard. Really...

DO IT......im debating on doing it myself. Once I get my 120 up and running and can break down my 55 ill do a 10G(live in an apartment thats why Im not doing the 55 salt too)

PP how do you clean the sand in that tank, or do you?

I am loveing turning my tank marine, i would say to anyone goahead and turn. I am going slow and getting peices as i have the money. It seems to not be that much more expensive then freshwater other then the initial cost (although i can see spending tons on a decent sized reef system.)

There are millions of living creatures in that sand that turn it over & eat detritus.

My problem, if I decided to go to the dark side, would be what to keep. The marine fish that interest me seem to be the more difficult ones, and I think I need to master keeping a freshwater tank before I try to do a saltwater one. I must admit I do get a laugh from those "sand eels" (that's not their name, but can't think of what they are called) .... they stick up from the sand and all just look around. They remind me of something off of 'Men in Black'.

I moved a few of the larger corals over from a 55g that was set up for a couple of years & the present tank is about 3 3/4 years old.

I love the lay out. I really love the flat coral on the left middle side of the tank. Whats thats stuff called. My LFS had some but it was like 1.5 feet wide. Too big for my 55g

I really like those giant green mushrooms on the right bottom too. Is that pulsing xenia at the top left. Sorry I been just staring at your pic while having some sushi. Fitting huh....Best part about your tank is how there's corals on corals. Theyre all striving to be in front of each other for light. Love that cuz it just looks soo natural. Makes my tank look terrible lol.
